After the fog burned off it was a gorgeous day in GNP. I hiked up Synder, Sprague Creeks a ways, walked along McDonald Creek and about half way to Avalanche Lake.

Walking along the creek I looked down and saw this rotting piece of wood covered in moss, the golden leaves of Fall with the water. I thought it made an interesting shot.

Another beautiful Yellowstone day

These are assorted shots from the last couple of days. My next post will be on waterfalls, check it out. Upper, Lower Falls on the Grand Canyon and Tower Falls are the most publicized but I'll post my favorites along with these.

"Reflections"

Two Oceans Lake on the continental divide. Half of the lake flows east and the other half to the west. Actually the lily pads and reflections of the old trees caught my eye.

Walking along the upper reaches of the Gibbon River and I spotted these 3 cutthroat trout lined up by size. Look close the smallest is to the left. There is also a 4th on the right side of photo, looks u shaped. These are native cutthroats.

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis)

Here are a few of my better shots of the bears I photographed. It was very exciting being able to photograph these amazing animals especially after years of trying to get these kind of shots and only getting glimpses. If you're hiking in bear country remember you are a guest in their home, make noise, respect, space, always carry pepper spray, back away slowly.

Yellowstone Park, Water & Wildlife Part 1

Today we explored the Norris Junction to Madison area of the park. I was concentrating on finding some small creeks, cascades and water falls to shoot. As a bonus we ran into another old bull bison and a bull elk with his small harem. Since the elk rut is in progress I'm hoping to find a couple of bulls fighting.
I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do finding the subjects and taking the shots.

We took a little hike to look at these "artist paint pots". Smelly, but very interesting and colorful. No surprise why they called mountain man John Colter's discovery, "Colter's Hell".

Yellowstone, first couple of days

After setting up we toured all the tourist shops in West Yellowstone and stopped by the local grocery store. The next day we awoke to clouds, rain and cool weather. Forecasts says it supposed to change tomorrow and then be nice for the rest of our stay. We visited Old Faithful and made several stops and side trips on the way. Even with the bad weather we enjoyed our day.

Grand Teton National Park

We left Laramie and drove to Jackson, Wyoming. I hadn't found an RV park I liked so we drove over the pass to Victor, Idaho (15 miles) and stayed a nice little park, Teton Valley Campground and RV Park. The drive back and forth over the pass wasn't that bad for the couple of days we visited the area.

Hidden Falls. We hiked up to the falls, then Carol went down to the boat dock and returned on the boat. I continued to Inspiration point and then hiked out.

Laramie, Wyoming for the Wedding

We were in Laramie for a few days to visit family and enjoy the wedding of our niece.

Very inviting beaver ponds are scattered below the Snowy Range Ski Area. Brook trout were abundant. The wedding took place on the stream bank in upper right of photo.

The day before we had planned on leaving for Billings I break a tooth. Dr.Mike met us at 7:00 AM at his office. After removing the nerves from the root of the tooth and giving me a temporary fix we hit the road. The tooth work will be continued when we return.

Friday night we went to a ball game. Mariners lost 4 to 2 to the Chicago White Sox. We had a wonderful time and shared an order of Garlic Fries.
Speaking of baseball, how about those Montana Little Leaguers. WOW! great job guys.

Mount Rainer National Park, August 24, 2011

On Wednesday we journeyed to Mount Rainer National Park. WOW! what beauty and inspiration. I could spend days here. The forests, meadows, glaciers, wild flowers (spectacular), water falls and the vast scenic wonders of this majestic volcano of been preserved for us all to see and experience. Our 5th National Park, designated in 1899.
If you haven't been here you definitely need to plan a visit. I'll be returning for sure.

We left Billings on Sunday morning and drove to Buffalo, Wy.. After setting up at our spot at Indian Campground (our favorite in Buffalo) we spent the evening and enjoyed a wonderful dinner with Carol's mother. The next day we left for Mitchell, SD, stayed here at the KOA then drove onto Kansas City, Mo.. We're at the KOA in KC and plan on leaving here tomorrow for southern Illinois.

Leaving Montana, we're hoping for a change in the weather. Not much change, we woke up to frozen water lines in Buffalo.

2011 Spring Trip - The birthday party

We're off on another adventure. Pulling out of the driveway at home we were both ready to go. Our first stop is Billings, Mt. for a couple of days. The drive to Billings was an experience in Montana spring weather, a little bit of sun(very little), rain, wind, snow and blizzard.

Thr truck an the Creek(our home) were nice and clean when we left, by the time we got to Billings it looked like we had just left hunting camp.

Ryan and Tricia rented a "Kids Playhouse" facility for Drew's birthday party, very nice. Made me wish I was a kid again.

Dads were having as much fun as the kids.

We left Durango and headed north. It certainly is a beautiful drive through Pagosa Springs and over Wolf Creek Pass. We decided to stay at the KOA in Colorado City and after we were set up found a very nice little out of the way restaurant. This would be our final evening together and after 5 weeks we were parting ways tomorrow. We had a great time and enjoyed traveling with W & Pam and can't wait for Nashville.

Wednesday, Carol and I drove to Laramie and had a fun evening with Chris and Dave. I can now say I've been in the Buckhorn Bar.

The next morning we left for Buffalo. After arriving and setting up we enjoyed a good dinner in downtown Buffalo and then spent the evening at the Occidental Hotel.......WOW! if you're in Buffalo, Wyoming on a Thursday night head to the Occidental Hotel. What a wonderful evening visiting and listening to good live music.

We spent the next two nights in Billings. Dinner with Ryan, Tricia & Drew and then Saturday night Carol and I watched Drew so Ryan and Tricia could go to dinner and a movie. Drew is growing up fast.

Sunday morning we left Billings and headed for home. It's nice to get home but I'm certainly going to miss our traveling companions and our "Big Adventure".

Check back every now & then for more posts. I won't be posting much until we hit the road again next Spring.

We were told the guy with the fiddle used to play with Grandpa Jones--very good! We heard songs like "Drivin Nails In My Coffin Over You", "My Dixie Darlin" to ""Blue Moon Of Kentucky" & more, what a great time.

Carol's new dance partner. I believe this ole guy is 96, lives at the Vets home. He never sat down the entire evening.

Durango, Co. 10-10-10

Our tickets for the train were for Sunday, 10-10, so we spent most of Saturday looking and shopping in ( it seemed like) every store in Durango. I will say, we had a very good lunch and cool beverages at the Steamworks Brewery.
Sunday we were up early and at the train station in plenty of time. With jackets, tickets and cameras in hand we boarded for our trip to Silverton. The trip this year was a little later than our trip a couple of years ago so I feel the colors were more brilliant with the Aspens and other trees and plants in Fall colors. After 3 hours we arrived in Silverton, we had time for lunch and a little shopping. We boarded back up at 2:30 PM and headed back to Durango. What a beautiful day and wonderful experience on the D&S Narrow Gauge.. Carol and I have made this trip twice now and it was just as enjoyable the second time as the first.

We left Albuquerque after a wonderful time, with many great memories. This is also where we parted ways with Bill & Metha. The four of us left for Durango, Bill and Metha left for Las Cruces, N.M..
On our way to Durango we stopped to visit the "Ghost Ranch", Georgia O'Keefe's home in New Mexico.
After our visit here we stopped at a little town called Tierra Amarilla for lunch. Margarita Comedor another great little restaurant with very authentic Mexican food. Everything was made locally and delicious.
After we arrived in Durango we got set up then went downtown purchased our tickets for our train ride to Silverton and back and then just strolled main street.

Albuquerque- Petroglyphs National Monument

A visit to Petroglyphs National Monument is like a walk through history of the area. Images are estimated to be 400 to 3000 years old. From ancestors of the Native people, to Spaniards and early explorers there are over 20,000 images etched in the stone of the park area. Visit the area and see if you feel a presence.

Albuquerque - Balloon Fiesta

Today we got up very early to board the shuttle at the RV park and head to the fairgrounds for this mornings "Mass Ascension". After a cramped up ride we arrived at the Fiesta. I think first grade schoolers may have been uncomfortable on this bus.....Geee! was it tight.
If you've never seen over 500 balloons lift off within a couple of hours........well, put this on your list. It's indescribably beautiful and exciting. I shot almost 300 photographs and with Carol's 100+ I have many photos to edit and trying to pick a few for the blog was like trying to pick a dozen roses out of 100's. After a great morning at the Balloon Fiesta we went to Petroglyhs National Monument (more on that in next post) and that evening we returned to the Monte Carlo Steakhouse for dinner again.........must be good.
I'll be trying to post 16 photos of Balloon Fiesta......hope it works. Enjoy!....we certainly did.

Albuquerque - The Ladies Big Day

Bill and I were up early so we could get the ladies, Carol, Pam & Metha to their Balloon launch site. I'm very happy they did this trip they all had a wonderful and memorable time. The balloon ride was over an hour long. After their landing, souvenirs and the champagne, the drive back to the RV park seemed short with non stop stories and details. I'm pretty certain a good time was had by all..

For dinner we made our first visit to the Monte Carlo Steakhouse. The next morning we got up very early to get to the fair grounds for another mass ascension.

Albuquerque - Old Town - 10-4-10

Today we spent most of the day at "Old Town" in Albuquerque. While the ladies strolled and shopped, W and I looked around a bit and listened to several entertaining musical groups. We especially enjoyed the Vega brothers and we both bought 3 of their CD's. The name of the group is called "Inka Gold", amazing musicians. Later, W and I found a nice place to take a break and enjoy a refreshing beverage. On the menu I saw they had "Navajo Tacos" so I suggested to W he try one. We both really enjoyed the Navajo Tacos and didn't need any dinner that night. Back at the RV park we relaxed outside in the beautiful weather and enjoyed the evening.
Tomorrow the ladies will be taking a balloon flight.

A great steakhouse we ate at two nights. Carol on the first night said it was the best steak she had every had. Remember not to judge a book by it's cover or might miss this place. The Monte Carlo Steakhouse had been featured on Diners, Dives and Drive In's on the Food Channel.

Albuquerque - Balloon Fiesta- 10-3-10

We arrived in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon. After setting up the RV we had a nice lunch, early dinner that W and Pam and prepared. Nice RV park, American RV, only complaint was the wifi signal was so inconsistent and weak that I couldn't post on the blog. So now we're in Durango at the KOA, good signal and I hope to get caught up.
We boarded our shuttle for the fairgrounds ready to experience our first event at the Balloon Fiesta. Our shuttle was and old school bus, a bit crowded but we made it down and back. This was by far better than trying to drive and park at the event.......what chaos that would have been.
Sunday night schedule was a balloon glow. It didn't happen because of the weather, but it was still awesome seeing all the balloons and some of them setting off glows. Beautiful fireworks display to end the evening.

Las Cruces, N.M. 10-2-10

We left Carlsbad drove north to Artesia then west over the mountains to White Sands National Monument and then to Las Cruces. All that white sand is amazing, mysterious and peaceful. After our visit we continued on to Las Cruces. We wanted to spend at least one night in Las Cruces and look around. We have heard and read that this is a great retirement community. I liked it, Carol was still undecided. Our RV park was set up on the bluffs west of town and had a gorgeous view over the town the Rio Grande River and the rugged San Andres Mountains. At the RV park Carol got to see her first real live Roadrunner, a cute and interesting bird, symbolic to the state of New Mexico.
We left early the next morning for Albuquerque and just a few miles north of Las Cruces we got to experience our first border patrol vehicle search.....interesting. The agent was very polite and after a short stop we were on our way north on I25.

Carlsbad

After our tour of the Caverns I went for a hike on a trail in the park. A little different than hiking at home but the colors and beauty of the landscape had me looking for more around every corner.

The following photos were shot on that hike at Carlsbad Caverns N.P.. There were places it looked like cactus covered the entire ground.
On to Las Cruces then to Albuquerque.

After we checked in to our RV park, Carlsbad KOA, we took off for Carlsbad Cavern NP to watch the bats leave the cave ("Mass Ascension"). Comment about the KOA.....if not the top KOA we've stayed in it's very very close. Beautiful park, great service and amenities, dinner and breakfast delivered to our site and what gorgeous sunrises.
We both enjoyed the Ranger program and watching the bats leave the cave for almost 3 hours. Needless to say we didn't get back to the RV park until late. We were up early and on our way back to the Caverns. Once we arrived at the visitors center we picked up our tickets and with our cameras & fanny pack we entered the caverns at the natural entrance and hiked down the main corridor to the Big Room. After touring the Big Room and about 3 hours after we started we took the elevators to the top. WOW! if you haven't been there you need to go at least once. I would definitely go back, Carol now, I don't think so, she got a little claustrophobic. We took a break in the visitors center then I took off on a hike on a nature trail while Carol looked around and waited for me. We still had time to drive down to Guadalupe National Park after I returned from my hike. Nothing special except it's the highest point in Texas. We drove back to Carlsbad after visiting the visitor center
After returning to the RV park we had a great barbecue dinner at the park. What a great dinner and day.

I have so many photos of Carlsbad Caverns (over 200) it will take a while to edit and pick a few to post.

Pecos National Historical Park

Our last day in Santa Fe Carol, Pam and I visited Pecos NHP and then we all went to the Santa Fe brewery and afterwards to the Cup de Ore in Eldorado village for dinner.

Pecos is an interesting site it is an era after Bandeleir and Mesa Verde. It has an old mission and the Santa Fe Trail was just south of the pueblos walls. Most of Pecos is still un-excavated. In addition to the mission and the Santa Fe trail, Pecos was a huge trading center for indians of the 4 corners region. The large meadow is still vacant where 100's of visiting indians would set up their teepee's and shelters. Pecos was permanent home to over 2000 residents. If you're in the area visit Pecos it is an enjoyable hour or two hike. The area has many artifacts and pottery sherds lying around, take only photos and memories home with you.

Santa Fe brewery, needs some TLC, but they make several nice brews. My favorite, of course, is their dark Porter. They call it "State Pen Porter", since the NM state pen is with in a few blocks. Can you just imagine being behind those fences and being able to see the brewery everyday.......I'm surprised some group hasn't done something about this inhumane torture :)

Dinner at the Cup de Ore was delicious, very comfortable and musical entertainment was an added bonus. Tomorrow Carol and I journey to Carlsbad, NM.

The mission is just east of the dwelling. Although the mission and attached dwellings look like part of the Pecos Indians dwelling, it was separate.

A large bone I found at the dwelling along with a few pieces of pottery.

Another kiva with the roof rebuilt and ladder. The hill behind the kiva is all part of the dwelling but very little excavation has been done.

Rooms of the dwelling look down to the meadow and valley where the Santa Fe Trail traveled through.

Santa Fe - 9/27,28/10

Today is Wednesday, 9/29/10. Our last day in Santa Fe, tomorrow we head to Carlsbad, NM.

Monday we all kind of did our own thing, W & Pam went to Cimarron, NM, to visit Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. Carol and I did laundry (yes I did help), then we went downtown and later had a wonderful dinner at Harry's Roadhouse, another must when you visit Santa Fe. Bill & Metha also went downtown. While we were downtown our first stop was the Nambe store, we now have a new 8 place setting of dinnerware. Very attractive, unique and will go well with our kitchen. Afterwards we stumbled around the Plaza and then stopped for dinner at Harry's Roadhouse on the original Route 66. I highly recommend the Turkey meatloaf......delicious!
Tuesday we journeyed to Chimayo, NM. to visit this quaint little 200 + year old village and to visit the "Santuario de Chimayo". I can't describe the feeling and peacefulness the I felt the first time I visited "El Santuario". I could have stayed there all day. "Since 1813 El Santuario is the key to all good". It has been a place of worship from the beginning, a place to pray, to thank, to ask, to meditate and to experience peace of mind as well as of body. It is called the "Lourdes of America". I'll always return here whenever I'm in the area.
After we left Chimayo we journeyed to Taos. Driving the high road through the mountains and villages we arrived to find out the Pueblo was closed. Somewhat disappointed are spirits were lifted with lunch at a local "cantina" in the Taos plaza. After wandering the plaza and visiting Kit Carson's home we headed back to Santa Fe.
Today we'll be getting things ready to leave and I would like to drive up to Pecos National Monument.

Bandelier National Monument 9/26/10

Today we left The RV park and headed toward Los Alamos, New Mexico to visit Bandelier National Monument. Carol and I really enjoyed our visit there a couple of years ago so we were looking forward to our return.
After watching a movie at the historic visitor center we picked up a couple of items, grabbed our cameras and water and went for a hike. The loop hike takes you through the valley and up along the cliffs. You visit several ancient ruins and I'm impressed with the engineering ability of the past ancestral pueblo dwellers. After the hike you realize what an ideal location Frijoles Canyon was for this ancient pueblo.
After our visit we returned to Santa Fe after visiting San Ildefonso reservation and pueblo. We had dinner at a Mexican restaurant named Maria's, dinner was good.

Pottery shard that I found on the edge of dwelling wall. After this photo I put it back exactly where it was and covered it with a little dirt. This piece looks like the pottery had a light brown ring on the top. Imagine how old this piece is and how many pueblo dwellers handled it.

This was a large dwelling with many rooms and at least two stories high. With this main dwelling and all of the cliff dwellings in this canyon this was a huge community.

Santa Fe, 9/25/10

Saturday morning we journeyed to the Railroad Yard in Santa Fe. We spent all morning touring the largest Farmers Market we had ever seen. So much to see it was a challenge to see it all. Next to the Farmers Market was a large area set up with Art and Crafts vendors. Naturally the ladies found something to purchase here. We all made some kind of purchase at the markets and then we drove to Trader Joe's for some more shopping.
We were back at the RV park early afternoon so Windsor and I could fire up our Dutch Ovens and get all the goodies ready for our Dutch Oven feast. Windsor cooked up some barbecued ribs and baked beans and I cooked up Porcupine meatballs and blue corn meal corn bread. Pam's friend Mary brought a wonderful dessert called "Death by Lemon". Everything was delicious, we all ate too much and then topped it off with Mary's fantastic "Death by Lemon". I didn't think I would need to eat for a couple of days afterwards.

Santa Fe, New Mexico 9/24/10

We made it to Santa Fe Thursday evening after a beautiful drive from Cortez. After we set up at our RV park we drove to a little restaurant we saw on the Food Channel's "Diners, Dives & Drive Ins". WOW! what great burgers. They had been selected as the best burger in New Mexico and several think it's the best in the nation. Nothing fancy and plan on waiting to get a table. We sat at the counter which had all 8 seats open when we arrived. Definitely a place to stop if you're in the area.

Friday morning we ate breakfast at the Tecolote Cafe(fantastic!). Afterwards, we went downtown to visit the Plaza, Loretta Chapel & Miraculous Staircase, San Miguel Chapel (the oldest church in the U.S.) and of course Canyon Road. While the ladies shopped in the Plaza, Bill, Windsor and I enjoyed a couple of beers at the Ore House. That evening we relaxed at the RV park, enjoying wine and chips & salsa.

Hovenweep National Monument

We're still in Cortez, we'll be leaving tomorrow. We've enjoyed our stay in Cortez once again.
Yesterday we visited the Canyon of Ancients and Anasazi Heritage visitors center. Afterwards we had a late breakfast at a wonderful little diner at the junction of CO. 184 and US 491. Fantastic food and service, if you're in the area definitely stop. Afterwards, we journeyed through the Canyon of the Ancients, visited the Hovenweep National Monument visitor center and hiked the The Little Ruin Canyon. The Canyon is home to many pithouses, pueblos, kivas and the towers that are Hovenweeps trade mark. On our way back to Cortez we stopped for a visit at the Ismay Trading Post and closer to Cortez we found a very nice winery.
Tomorrow we'll drive through some of my old stomping grounds as a kid, memories will be good tomorrow. My next post will be from Santa Fe.

Mesa Verde National Park

This morning we packed up some snacks and water and headed for Mesa Verde NP. Carol and I visited the park 2 years ago but Windsor and Pam hadn't been here. After stopping at the visitors center and getting our passports stamped and picking up tickets for our ranger tour we drove to Cliff Palace. Our tour was at 1:30 and we were back to the truck about 3:00. It's always interesting to tour the cliff dwellings and listen to different rangers. We checked out some additional sites in the park and then returned to Cortez. Carol suggested we have dinner at a Mexican restaurant that we ate at 2 years ago, "Tequilas". We were not disappointed. All the photos posted are from Mesa Verde.

Arches National Park, Moab, Ut.

Day two at Moab we took off to explore Arches NP and to look for dinosaur tracks on some of the jeep trails north of Moab. Canyonlands and Arches are a photographers dream and someday I would love to spend more time hiking and working on just photography of these two gems. From sunrise to sunset your light is constantly changing making the rock formations, cliffs, arches and any shot different than what it was an hour ago. After our day of exploring I snuck away to climb up a canyon wall to photograph the Delicate Arch at sunset. Just being on top of the canyon, dead silent, surrounded by all the beauty of Arches NP landscapes was inspiring, what a wonderful place to be. As darkness filled the sands, canyons and monuments of Arches I headed back to the parking area. Although I am eagerly anticipating my photographs of Delicate Arch, just being there at that moment was something I'll never forget.

We picked up our jeep on Tuesday night and it has been non-stop since. WOW! what a great time down here with the jeep exploring Canyonlands and the Moab area. All posted photos are from Canyonlands and Long Canyon, Pucker Pass.

Grand Junction, Co. Sept.12 & 13

We stayed at the KOA in Grand Junction. Very nice RV park. Our first day we spent shopping and of course we did spend some time at the new Cabela's. Later in the afternoon we picked some fresh fruit and enjoyed some wine tasting at local wine cellars. Carol and I really enjoy Grand Junction, it seems like a nice community. The next morning after we did some repairs on Pam & W's fifth wheel we took off for Colorado National Monument. If you haven't visited you need to put this one on your list. It doesn't take long to drive Rimrock Drive and visit the visitors center. The scenery is beautiful and I really enjoyed some of the short hikes. I hope I can get a few photos posted. The weather has been wonderful.

" Fishing the Green "

I have several photos I want to post when we get to an RV park with stronger wifi. My words cannot describe my experience "Fishing the Green" or the expert guidance and teachings of Gene Gautieri.

We met Gene at Trout Creek Flies at 9:00 AM, loaded up our gear and headed to the launch. We launched a short distance below the dam. Gene rigged up our rods with nymphs with a strike indicator. We were into fish right away as we were most of the day. I have never seen so many trout, the trout per mile must be one of the highest in the nation if not the highest. The scenery is remarkable but taking your eye off your fly or indicator to take in this magnificent canyon you may miss a fish.We floated 7 to 8 hours, that went by way to fast. Windsor and I both caught several fish, Rainbows and Browns and we missed several fish and lost a few. Floating through Red Canyon on the Green we went through several sets of rapids, then you'll slowly float through deep holes, shallow riffles and some of best looking water there is. Gene would row us back up river to fish several holes again and again. I learned more from Gene about trout & fly fishing in one day than the past 35 years of fishing. Gene is an expert angler, guide, teacher, a true professional. Thanks! W and Gene for a day to remember.

The weatherman missed on their forecast, the weather was beautiful, very little wind and sun most of the day.
After our trip down the Green I found myself immediately anticipating plans for my next trip.

Later we enjoyed a wonderful dinner and evening at Gene and Renee's home.

We left Rock Springs early Friday and 66 miles later we arrived in Dutch John. Dutch John was originally home to those that worked on the construction of the dam.The dam is on the Green River creating Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
We checked into to the RV park behind the Fly Shop, set up everything and went to Trout Creek Flies to get our licenses. Windsor and I went to the river to test the water. We fished a short stretch of river basically to kill some time. That evening we met up with our guide and his wife, Gene & Renee, and had dinner at the Flaming Gorge Resort.
The plan is to meet at 9:00 AM Friday and "Fish the Green". Carol and Pam are getting a personal tour of the dam and meeting Renee for some sight seeing of Flaming Gorge.
The weather report for Friday wasn't great but getting on the water was all that mattered.

Well we’re in Rock Springs…..nuff said. The drive from Montpelier to Rock Springs is very nice until about Granger, then it’s pretty much …..well it’s what most of Wyoming is.

Our friends should be here shortly and then who knows what will happen. The next 2 nights I’m sure we’ll have no wifi, so I’m making a mini post today. After we get to Grand Junction I’ll post photos of our fishing the Green River and the sights at Dutch John, Utah.

The beginning of our 2010 Fall Big Adventure

We started our Fall Big Adventure at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, September 7. I wanted to get an early start, I was going to make it to Montpelier, Idaho the first night, 570 miles. Then we have a short day tomorrow and meet up with our friends in Rock Springs and then head to Dutch John, Utah for some flyfishing on the Green River.
We left home watching a beautiful sunrise, unfortunately the photo below didn't capture it well. Driving through the Swan is always on adventure and today we only shared the road with many deer, no bear, elk or moose. As the sun was peaking over the mountains and waking up the Bob Marshall Wilderess area, I thought back to all the great hunting trips we had over the years and the many great memories.
We stopped at Clearwater Junction for a break and then we were off again. Getting on I 90 at Garrison and stopping in Deer Lodge for fuel. Turning south on I15 and heading south until we hit US 30 in Idaho. Then 30 to Montpelier.
South of Dillion on the Beaverhead the fly fisherman were busy, busy, busy. Drift boats, rafts, pontoons and wade fishermen, this river was packed.
Idaho got their share of stimulus monies, road construction was everywhere.
It's getting late and I'm sure tomorrow will be a long day, time for bed.

We made it home from our trip and RV rally in Kansas City. What a great time we had.

We've been home for a couple of months and in addition to both of us working part time, taking care of the yard, sub-division projects we have made a few trips up to Glacier Park. Tonya and the boys came over for a few days and we spent one day in the Park with them and Carol and I spent one together hiking and visiting a couple different places in the park.

We leave in September for "Fall Big Adventure". We're meeting friends in Dutch John, Utah, then floating & fly fishing on the Green River, then we're off to Grand Junction, Co for dinosaur hunting, then to Moab, Utah for a week and this is only the beginning. We'll be gone for 6 weeks and I promise I'll try to get a post on our blog at least every other day. I have several projects I need to get completed before we leave but I'll make a couple more posts before we leave. Carol and I are both still working part time. We try to keep it part time anyway.

Monday, May 17 - Kansas City

Saturday, we drove over to Cablea's. After a couple of hours of touring Cabela's we decided to try and find "Oklahoma Joe's" Barbecue. Thank goodness we had a GPS, we would have never found it. Even when the GPS said we were there I couldn't see it. Sitting at the intersection there was a Shamrock gas station on one corner and old grocery store and a couple of other older buildings. I noticed a small sign on the gas station and many cars. As we pulled in I noticed there was no parking, the place was packed, an employee happened to be outside and told me I could park out back. When we walked around the corner heading to the entrance the line was outside the building and down the side walk. After 45 minute wait, we ordered, got our order, set down and thoroughly enjoyed some great barbecue.

Saturday, May 15 - Kansas City

We arrived at our RV park in Oak Grove, Mo. Thursday afternoon. They recently had 3" of rain so it was pretty wet. After setting up the Creek we spent time visiting with our friends from Tennessee and hearing first hand about the flooding in Nashville.
The RV park is nice and the people are very friendly and helpful. Friday was beautiful, sunshine and very warm. We visited the Missouri Welcome Center, Bass Pro Shops, Nationwide RV, a large Costco and had dinner at a small family owned barbecue. Dinner was very good. Today we plan on going to Cabela's and visit with my contact there, going downtown and of course finding some more delicious barbecue.

We left the Black Hills of South Dakota in pouring rain, light snow flakes and poor visibility. After we're on I90 we made our first stop at Wall Drug. Although we were looking for some specific items we had a good time being tourists, enjoyed lunch and hit the road. We spent Tuesday night at Mitchell, SD. After getting the Creek (our fifth wheel for you non-Creekers)set up we had to go and tour Cabela's and naturally we found a couple of items we couldn't pass up. We left Cabela's filled up the truck with diesel and then found a nice Mexican restaurant. Yes, in South Dakota and yes in was pretty good. Not New Mexico level but pretty good for the north. After dinner Carol says she wants to go see the Corn Palace, to see what it looks like after dark. It looks like it does during the day except it's all lit up. After the Corn Palace we returned to the Creek. This morning we left Mitchell around 10:00 AM, rain and wind.......what's new? We stopped at a couple of nice rest areas and then stopped for the night in North Sioux City. Our first RV site we sunk in the mud and had to put truck in 4 wheel drive to pull out. The spot we have now is OK. South Dakota is flooding everywhere and is soaked. We visited the "Lewis & Clark" interpretive center here in Sioux City, very nice.
Tomorrow we'll make it to Kansas City now that the weather is supposed to start improving.

Monday May 10, 2010 - Mt Rushmore, Hill City

Sunday was beautiful!.....Thank goodness, we finally had a nice day. Today, Monday morning however, is a another story. Raining and cool and no change in forecast until tomorrow morning. Today we plan on visiting a couple of wineries and a couple of stores Carol scouted out. Tuesday we'll hook up and head for Sioux City.
Visiting Mount Rushmore was and still is inspiring. So much as changed it felt like it was my first visit. I feel the changes were for the good.
After leaving Mt. Rushmore we visited Crazy Horse. I respect the attraction and admire the artistry but my thoughts are this a commercial enterprise utilizing the legends of great Sioux Chief and hero of Native Americans. We won't see the completion of Crazy Horse in our life time or our grand childrens.

Happy Mothers Day!

After enjoying breakfast at Carol's mothers home we hit the road for South Dakota. I enjoyed the drive, except for the wind. It was nice seeing the places and reminiscing of our youth, football games, school, work, family and places we used to park (I wonder if kids still park?).

Today we left Billings around 10:30 AM and drove to Buffalo, Wy.. Set up the Creek (our fifth wheel) and went to visit with Carol's mother. After a nice visit we decided to go have dinner at the Winchester Steak House. Very nice dinner. In the morning we'll meet for breakfast then Carol and I will leave for Hill City , SD. Doesn't sound like the weather will be very nice. Oh Well!...could always be worse.

We left Wednesday morning on another journey. Looking out the window I can see winter hasn't left us yet. After fixing a 12 volt problem on the fifth wheel (our new home), we finally hit the road. South to Missoula then I90 to Billings. We plan on staying 2 nights in Billings visiting Ryan, Tricia & Drew.

Heading up Homestake Pass...........Yippee!...... no snow

We pass this truck hauling this huge raft combo aluminum river or some kind of water craft. It was probably 30 feet long and had 3, yes 3, 300 horse power Mercury outboards on the back. WOW! that thing will haul.

This was our view most of the way. Low visibility, snow or rain and HIGH winds. We had to make an unexpected stop in Anaconda for fuel. I think we would have ran out if I had tried to make

it to Rocker(Butte).

Surprise! 3" of snow this morning (Thursday) and it's still snowing.

Olympic National Park - Rialto Beach

Our visit and hike along Rialto Beach will be something we won't forget. The drive from Port Angeles was maybe an hour and half but it's such a beautiful drive it could have been longer. When we arrived it was very foggy, which we later learn this was "ocean air" and the tide was coming in. As the tide started to go out, about 3:00 PM, the skies("ocean air") started to clear. We met a wonderful gentleman that walks the beach everyday with his dog (a Sheltie), he's a retired geologist and worked on the Pacific Rim with the USGS. He walked about half way with us on our hike and we both now have a better appreciation for and understanding of the nature of the ocean, particularly this beach and this area's ecosystem. He was amazing and it was free. Never judge people until you have walked & talked with them, thanks Larry!

Carol at the beach. I was glad she wore that pink jacket, it was easier to see her. These monster trees Carol and I are standing next to were all over the beach. Some are from the shoreline and some come down from the rivers, the ocean waves and high tides push them up onto the shore. Because this is a National Park they can't be harvested.

Here I am walking along the beach, Larry is up in front of me. Whenever he found something interesting he would stop and explain it to us. Different rock formations in the shoreline, pieces off an old ship wreck, tide changes, counting the waves( the 11th wave is always the highest) and much more.

Carol and I decided to eat dinner in La Push, Wa., a fishing village just south of Rialto Beach across the Quillayute River. The only restaurant was in this old ramshackled building built over the water. The food, well let's just say it was food, however we did get to view this beautiful sunset, we were both glad we stayed.

Both of these shots were from the same area, one has a seagull flying in it. The top one is the actual view, the bottom one I used my software to brighten up the sky which in turn made the water a more blue.

Monday & Tuesday we spent touring and hiking in the Park.+

An old road that leads to a trailhead up Elwha River Valley.

Looking off Hurricane Ridge you can see the Strait of Juan De Fuca, the town of Squim and in the distances is Mount Baker.

Looking toward Mount Olympus from Hurricane Ridge. There are over 60 active glaciers in Olympic National Park.

I'm on the Hurricane Ridge trail facing the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Yes, that is snow.

Carol on a trail in the Elwha Valley. The growth is amazing, green foilage, ferns everywhere and then in many places the sun is blocked from the forest floor because of the mass of old growth timber. Moss, lichen and many froms of fungus grow rampant in the rain forest.

Madison Creek Falls, a falls approximately 20 feet tall. A short hike to this little gem in the forest.

Port Angeles, Wa. October 4-10

We left Bothell on Sunday and pulled into Port Angeles in the middle of the afternoon. What a gorgeous day for a drive, beautiful blue skys and you could see both Mount Rainer and Mount Baker.

After we set everything up we drove into town and went for a walk along the pier.

Bridge on Highway 16 crossing the Tacoma Narrows. Each lane on the bridge was separated with a 2 foot section that was flexible. You could actually be driving in one lane and the car next to you could be higher or lower than your lane.

Seattle, October-1st, 2nd, 3rd

We spent 3 days in Kenmore/Bothell area visiting Tonya, Kent and the boys. Carol and I stayed with the boys a couple of evenings so TJ and Kent could go out. Then on Saturday we had a great time watching the boys and their soccer teams. The weather was just great for Seattle....no rain. We made our usual trip to Trader Joes and also took the boys to dinner one evening at Ruby's. The boys are big fans of their milkshakes. We left Sunday morning for Port Angeles.

Garden Wall Hike, Glacier National Park

On Friday, September 11 we hiked along the Garden Wall. Starting at Logan Pass you hike along the sheer cliff trails, then along the Garden Wall, alternating through dense alpine vegeatation, steep rocky slide areas and through open subalpine meadows. We hiked to the pass behind Haystack Butte, approx. 4 miles one way, enjoyed a snack and took in the breath taking scenery. The views from this trail are unbelievable. Put this hike on your "Bucket List". I only wish I had two sets of eyes, one to watch the trail and the other to enjoy this place that only God and nature could have created.

Behind Haystack Butte we saw a couple of mountain goats in this area. Over that rock ledge you can see Grinnell Glacier. Note the cloud formations.

We saw several bighorns along our hike.

You can see in this photo how narrow the trail is in some places. It's a good thing I'm so skinny. That pass off in the distance was our destination and turn around point.

Johns Lake hike, Glacier National Park

On Friday, September 4, Carol and I journeyed back up to our favorite hide away. We made a couple of stops on the way to the Johns Lake trail head parking area. Apgar village, so Carol could make her weekly run through the gift shops. At Apgar I took a few shots of Lake McDonald and a few more along the road side. The boat rental dock at Apgar.

Mini Rally at Fairmont, Part 2

On Saturday, Jack (Windsor and I owe him for this), Peg, Carol and Pam went to Deerlodge and toured the Historical Montana State Penitentiary, Car museum and a little shopping. Windsor and I journeyed to the Big Hole river for a little fly fishing. On Sunday we went to the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historical Site. Carol and I have drove by the Ranch a 100 times and never stopped, I'm glad we did this time. We spent the entire afternoon touring this wonderful and historical site. Sunday evening Windsor and Jack fired up the Dutch Oven and we all enjoyed another fantastic dinner.

Windsor fly-fishing the Big Hole. We had fair success, 3 or 4 browns and a couple rainbows. I had one brown that was over 15". While fishing one spot we had a visitor. A Black Bear probably 30 feet from me entered the river, swam to the other side and scampered up the hill side.

Glacier Park with Friends

In August we spent 3 days in Glacier Park with friends before we left for Fairmont Hot Springs. The weather was super and so was the company. We took a day tour on the "Red Bus". Our driver/guide was very good and we all had a wonderful and memorable time.

Good Morning!......Sitting on the deck at 5:30 AM watching the sun come up. Enjoying a cup of coffee. Watching 4 or 5 coyotes down in meadow, humminbirds darting around my feeder, deer coming up out of the creek bottom. My favorite part of the day. The sun starts to come up warming the skys and pushing the cool air down making this the coolest part of the day. What a great feeling.

Wildlife shots 8/16

Here's a very small sampling of some of my wildlife shots. Most were taken with a 35mm Minolta XD11 or XE7 with various Minolta lenses. I've recently experimented with saving these 35 mm slides to a digital format. Some of the quality is lost in the transfer but overall it's not bad. Black bear cub keeping a close eye on me.

Two very nice bull elk. I believe this shot was taken around the Cooke City, Mt. area.Bald eagles, one is enjoying his recently caught salmon.

I was probably 20 feet below this cat when I took this and several shots of this treed cat. One of Carol's objections to my wildlife photography hobby.

This young ram is keeping his eye me. As long as he was chewing on his cud I was OK to approach.
You don't see many Mule Deer bucks like this anymore.

This nice bull was right out side my tent where I winter camped.
OK truthfully........these 2 bulls are only sparring, playing.

Mountain goats I shot on the south fork of the Flathead near a goat lick. I was hanging out off the edge to get this shot.

This big ole muley buck was laying down in the tall sage brush and as I approached he stood up.......kind of startled me.

Glacier Park in July

July 17th we spent the day in Glacier Park with Tonya and the boys, Aidan, Cooper and Noah. These photos I shot on our hike into and back from Avalanche Lake. About 6 miles round trip. The key to enjoyable hiking in Glacier is, take your time. You miss so much if you don't spend time to look. Along the trail with the sun peeking through the cedars.

Avalanche Creek, be sure of your footing around the creek.

Walk across the road from our campsite and this was the view. Yellowstone river with the bluffs along the south side. Same way it look for the trappers, early settlers and the native Indians over a 100 years ago.
This heron stood in this same spot all night and most of the next day looking for a fish to swim by. They must not have much feeling in those spindly little legs, the water was very cold.

A morning in Amish Country

Early one morning I got up and drove out into the country. I parked my truck at wide spot in the road and just started walking on the Amish country back roads. Here are a few of my favorite shots from that morning. Heading to Sunday service.

A nice looking little fishing hole. I sat here a while just to listen to the bull frogs.
A scene you'll see over and over.
Most of the homes are immaculate, kerosene tank, propane tank, clothes line, very neat well maintain square fencing and loads of flowers and gardens

Roads are everywhere and seem to go on forever.
Trees and fence border the phone shed. No phones are allowed in the house so they build these nice looking sheds and usually share the phone with neighbors.
Small group of goats I ran into. Looked like they all needed to be milked.
These monster bird condos are very popular. They must try to attract the birds to help keep insect activity down. With cows, horses and goats everywhere you're sure to have insects.

Flower gardens and arrangements are very pretty. I had one Amish lady invite to see the flowers at her home.

The "South Side Diner" in Goshen, featured on the Food Channels "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" with Guy Fieri. Triple D as it is called by serious fans. We enjoyed "Philly Chili", curly fries and more. "Philly chili" was the featured speciality on triple D. However, anything on the menu is delicious. If you're ever in Goshen, Indiana stop by, you won't be disappointed. Later she realized, maybe management should listen to production personnel more.

On Friday we toured DRV Luxury Suites factory. Very impressive, we like the Mobile Suites fifth wheel. The quality and construction far exceeds that of Cedar Creek and so does the price. Will we be in a Moblie Suites fifth wheel someday? It wouldn't surprise me. Carol was impressed with our names being flashed on reader board sign at the factory welcoming us and the Anderson's. After touring the factory we visited a local dealer.
Carol and Pam celebrating making it to day 2 by making margaritas. We enjoyed a BBQ and a relaxing evening and only ONE Margarita.

We made it to the Fairgrounds in Goshen just afternoon. I set up everything then we enjoyed some refreshments with fellow Creekers that had arrived early. A little advice to fellow travelers.....AVOID the Indiana tollway! What a rip off, expensive, and one of the worse highways we've been on.
