Sunday, September 7

Cortez, Co.
We slept in this morning and didn't get on the road until around 10:30. What a beautiful day, clear skies and in the 70's when we left Moab. We enjoy more of nature's brilliant work of art south of Moab. As we drive through Monticello, Utah, I imagine a once busy little town during the oil boom, but now very little business is open. Buildings are boarded up and the streets are in very bad condition. Looks like the population that remains is trying to promote tourism and draw from the many national parks and monuments in Southern Utah. As we head southeast toward Cortez, the countryside starts to green up and pinto beans and sunflower harvest are a big agricultural commodity. Cortez is larger town than I thought. Has a Wallgreen and a Super Walmart, no Kmart however....oh well. The KOA we're staying at is very nice, very clean, beautiful views and little cottontail rabbits running all over the place. Tomorrow we have to take care of some business in town and then we'll head to Four Corners National Monument. Of course I'll have to get a picture of Carol standing in 4 states at the same time. On our way back to Cortez we plan on visiting Ute Tribal grounds and maybe a trading post or two. We plan on visiting Mesa Verde National Park on Tuesday.

More of the beautiful red sand rock formations south of Moab.
Wilson Arch south of Moab.
Acres and acres of sunflower seeds around Dove Creek, Co. and the Utah border.
We went a craft show in Cortez. Isabell and Harry Benally from Sheep Springs, NM. are very talented at carving juniper sculptures and making jewelry. http://www.dinelady.com/
Look at the size of these margaritas we had at "Tequilas", a Mexican restaurant in Cortez. The food was very authentic and delicious.
Looking out the back of our site at the KOA in Cortez.
